The Sheriff's main office and jail are at 403 E. Houghton Ave.,
Houghton, MI 49931, located next door to the Houghton County Courthouse
(which is currently under renovation). All visitors and general
public can enter through the front door, shown above. As you come towards the jail
building on the sidewalk from the courthouse, note the cornerstone on the wall facing you
(east), indicating the year the jail was built -- 1963. At that time the Sheriff and his
family (John Wiitanen) lived in the front section of the jail, which has now been
remodeled into office space and the old office section has been transformed into more cell
space. The main jail has a housing capacity of 28 inmates and is usually full to capacity.
