I really enjoyed the web site. Although I didn't see anything on recruitment. As a current student in Criminal Justice I would really like some information on the requirements of the Houghton County Department. Thank You.
Response: As a Deputy Sheriff with arrest powers, you need to be a graduate of an MCOLES "Michigan Commission on Law Enforcemnt Standards" academy, commonly referred to as "police school academy", also a resident of the state of MI, High School graduate (all other degrees earned will give you more of an advantage). All applicants must submit a letter, resume, and job application in order to be considered.

I had a question I'm taking classes for corrections through Gogebic in Lanse I was wondering if these class would work for a job at a county jail or do you have to have law enforcement background too. The classes that I'm taking are Client Growth and Development. Client Relations in Corrections. Legal Issues in Corrections. Introduction to Corrections. And Correctional Institutions/Facilities.
Response: We require that same 15 college credits that the DOC (State Prison) requires for entry level corrections officers. Those are or should be the same classes that you are presently taking, if they are the ones to prepare you to apply to the state.
