HOUGHTON COUNTY MARINE PATROL RESCUES SAILBOAT
July 30, 2001
Deputies Keith Raffaelli and Jack Larson while on routine patrol July 30, 2001 came across a sailboat in distress. The engine stalled on the sailboat during some high winds which carried the boat up against the Portage Lake lift bridge.

Shown in the photo is Deputy Raffaelli throwing a rope to the boat’s owner, Deb Kinzi of Houghton. Up above the sailboat on the railroad trestle Jeff Martin, visiting from Escanaba helps keep the boat mast from hitting the bridge. The Sheriff’s boat in the photo is being operated by Deputy Jack Larson. The Deputies were successful in getting Kinzi and her boat away from the bridge and over to the marina area whereby they were able to get the sailboat’s engine started and Kinzi was on her way.
